Sport is one of the first ways that a child or young adult does something for its own sake. No one asks a basketballer why she basketballs. She does it because it is what it is, and is fun. In this way, sport provides a first look at something intrinsically good and pleasant.
Golden View Classical Academy’s core virtues are at the root of successful, enjoyable, and fair athletic competition, and contribute to the overall development of character. Winning requires courage. At some point, natural ability is outmatched by consistent hard work, and courage is what turns natural ability into true and deserving talent. At the same time, winning has a way of inflating pride beyond proportion, so students need to learn moderation to accept defeat as part of their improvement. To be on a team and compete well, students must exercise responsibility and friendship, as these give a team cohesion, integrity, and a unified purpose. Finally, athletics teach students about justice, about the goodness of not accepting an unfair win or an unearned victory, and holding teammates to account.
The athletics program at Golden View Classical Academy takes seriously the place of virtue in education, and strives to teach students a love of honor and the joy of doing something just because.
Currently, Golden View Classical Academy offers cross country and track and field for athletics. 6th-8th Grade students and High School students may compete on these teams.
