Golden View Classical Academy is partnering with Anna Rose Bain, a local artist and Hillsdale College graduate, as well as with Hillsdale College, to produce an original work of art for the school. We are excited to share with you the progress we have made thus far.
The work, as of yet untitled, will depict Abraham Lincoln and his rightly praised Second Inaugural Address. In that speech, delivered at the end of the Civil War but before final victory, is a masterpiece of fortitude, generosity, and prudence. Lincoln not only expresses his will to exterminate slavery, but to do so in a way that heals the nation’s wounds rather than simply punishes the South.
Part of the overall project will be to document the steps it takes to create an original work of art, from planning and sketches to the final product. Here, Mrs. Bain has shared the first step in her study of Lincoln. She recently collaborated with a professional Lincoln presenter named John Voehl. He had much say about the 2nd Inaugural and the circumstances surrounding it. As he posed for a portrait and photos, he also quoted the speech (and others) from memory. As part of this study, Mrs. Bain took several hundred photos in different poses and lighting, and did a color study from life to use as reference for the studio painting.
We hope you enjoy!
